The December 7, 2008 Modern Art & Design Auction featured over 580 outstanding lots of paintings, prints, sculpture, furniture, and other decorative objects. The auction, the first to be held at the 11,000-square foot facility on Hart Street in Van Nuys, showcased an extraordinary collection of work from the world's most renowned modern artists from 1935 to 2005.
This auction's premier selections included an extremely rare custom executed Diego Giacometti coffee table and pair of lamps from the original owner, an Isamu Noguchi glazed ceramic sculpture executed circa 1950, with historical provenance, an Andy Warhol Marilyn color lithograph, and a large selection of ceramics by Gertrud & Otto Natzler.
Realizing $216,000, the Giacometti coffee table (Lot 208 est. $150,000 - 200,000) stood out as the main highlight. The pair of lamps (Lots 207 and 208 est. $30,000 - 40,000 each) realized $60,000 each, an outstanding price for such rare pieces. Other highlights included a Claire Falkenstein custom hanging screen (Lot 1 est. $25,000 - 35,000, realized $42,000), the acrylic painting Untitled (Orange Family C.245) by Richard Anuszkiewicz (Lot 15 est. $10,000 - 15,000, realized $16,800), and a Michael Arntz monumental"Garden Pot" sculpture (Lot 174 est. $10,000 - 15,000, realized $12,000).
